Olympic Gymnast Turned Hollywood Stuntman Nicholas Daines wants Oscars for stunt performers

Having recently won a SAG Award for one of his stunts in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (pt 2) former Team GB gymnast and professional high diver turned Hollywood stuntman Nicholas Daines is keen to see stunts recognised in the Oscar ceremony.

Nicholas - a member of the 2012 Olympic bid - says "Personally, I think that there should be a stunt category at the Oscars. We are the unsung heroes of the film industry and we risk our lives to create the action sequences that save the faces of the stars that get all the glory. The industry's early stuntmen such as Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton were the pioneers of this booming industry we know today. They didn't have the luxury of air bags and crash pads, so I think their accomplishments would certainly deserve acknowledgement."

Nicholas has appeared in films such as Die Another Day, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Hobbit and many more - and he performs as a zombie in forthcoming World War Z.He also appears in commercials for brands such as Audi, Adidas, Speedo, G Star Raw and Vodafone.

Nicholas still trains with his local gymnastics club and is keen to support Team GB this year. He say: "I'm extremely proud of my role in winning the bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. It is now an amazing part of history, and a framed signed photograph from Lord Coe of the campaign takes pride of place on my living room wall. It was an amazing opportunity to be able to give something back to a sport that has given me so much. I think the Olympics will be amazing for London.

"We have learned so much since the last Olympic Games here and it will do wonders for sport in general in this country. It is about time that sport took a front seat in the UK and I think we underestimate its importance in our culture. We have neglected it at times over the years, but I have high hopes that the Olympic legacy will inspire the British to get more involved in sport and achieve even greater things in the future.

"Sport is incredibly important in our society. It teaches immense discipline, and there is also a significant correlation with sport and high academic achievement. With obesity on the increase and anti-social behaviour out of control in this country, we need to invest in sport and realise what an important tool it is in the education and development of Britain's youth"
