The Strange World Of Gurney Slade On Dvd On 15th August 2011

Both a product of its time and also wildly ahead of itself, Both firmly of and spectacularly ahead of its time, THE STRANGE WORLD OF GURNEY SLADE (PG) is said to be to television comedy what The Prisoner is to television drama - brilliantly inventive and startlingly surreal.

It's a compelling mix of innovation that pre-dates The Mighty Boosh and Psychoville, THE STRANGE WORLD OF GURNEY SLADE - THE COMPLETE SERIES (PG) is available for the first time in any format on 15th August 2011, RRP £14.99.

The story is that Anthony Newley stars as an actor who walks off the set of a banal sit-com in disgust and ennui, and into a fantasy world of his own imagination. In this strange odyssey through his own personal alternative reality, he indulges in random conversations with both animals and inanimate objects - it's a world in which characters can step out of advertising posters and where he can hear the most intimate thoughts of passers-by!

An unpredictable, absurdist fantasy, Gurney Slade created an indelible impression upon anyone who saw it. Created by Newley and written by the highly talented Sid Green and Dick Hills (who were soon to become key writers for Morecambe and Wise), this series has been newly transferred from the original 35mm film elements specifically for this release.

Miley Cyrus director Tom Vaughan backs plan to create inspirational arts centre in Helensburgh

Hollywood film director Tom Vaughan has pledged his support for the creation of an arts & entertainment centre in his hometown of Helensburgh on Scotland’s west coast.

Vaughan, who has recently completed directing Miley Cyrus in forthcoming action comedy “So Undercover”, grew up in Helensburgh and says the plan to create the centre is a ‘wonderful idea’ for the town that inspired him to become a film director.

Vaughan said: “Helensburgh is where I saw my first movies and made my first attempts at film making. I went from watching Harrison Ford in the original ‘Star Wars’ at the old La Scala cinema to directing him in my own film many years later. It’s a long journey but one that started in Helensburgh and I’m sure that this centre, which I wholeheartedly support, will provide similar inspiration for the young people of the town.”

“Speaking both as a film director and a filmgoer there is no better way to see a movie than with an audience and on the big screen. Seeing films in Helensburgh inspired me to pursue a career as a director and it was a terrible shame when La Scala closed down in 1984.”

The Helensburgh Heroes Charity has recently received planning permission to convert a former Victorian Warehouse in the town into a three storey Arts and Entertainment Centre, complete with two digital auditoriums, a 50s style diner and arts space.

The charity also hopes to establish a ‘Helensburgh Heroes Hall of Fame', with memorabilia and displays to celebrate the lives of the local men and women who have made significant contributions to society in their chosen fields. Over 100 inductees have been identified to date, including ‘Father of Television’ John Logie Baird, movie stars Deborah Kerr and Jack Buchanan, authors WH Auden and AJ Cronin and members of the Glasgow Boys and Girls Arts movement.

The charity hopes that by telling the stories of these ‘Heroes’, young people from the town and visitors to the centre will be inspired to emulate their achievements.

It is a sentiment that is echoed by Tom Vaughan. He added: “I remember seeing a model of John Logie Baird’s early TV set in the local library and it made me think that you can come from a small town like Helensburgh and go out into the world and do whatever you want.”

Phil Worms, Director of the Helensburgh Heroes charity, said: “We are delighted that Tom has taken the time out from his hectic production schedule to offer us his support. He absolutely epitomises what this arts and entertainment centre will be about. He is living his dream and we hope that the Heroes Centre will allow many other young people in the town to pursue theirs.”

Worms added: “The West Coast of Scotland boasts an incredibly rich and diverse heritage, and one of which we should be rightly proud, and we hope that companies and individuals will step forward and help us celebrate the achievements of these inspirational men and woman, by supporting the Centre’s fund raising efforts.”

JLS 3D film best ever attended music cinema event in UK

Only meant to be shown for one day, Eyes Wide Open, the 3D film extravaganza from JLS, had to extend it’s nationwide screenings, not just once but twice, making it the best attended music cinema event ever staged in the UK.

Produced by Bikini and Fulwell 73 and filmed on JLS’ sold-out UK arena tour, the movie goes behind the scenes to hear from the band what goes into being JLS as well as amazing concert footage shot at The O2, London in front of capacity crowds in January 2011.

Richard Griffiths of Modest! Management: ‘We are thrilled with the fans’ response to the film. The cinema promotion was perfect timing ahead of our summer tour and new single “She Makes Me Wanna”. Making this movie was a huge undertaking and breaking the record for attendance cements JLS’ position as pop superstars’.

With total ticket sales for Eyes Wide Open now in excess of 70,000, premium content distributor Omniverse Vision has beaten its own previously held record for Les Misérables. The JLS film hit the top five of the UK Box Office chart on day of release and remained firmly in the Top 10 across the opening weekend.

John Gaydon of Omniverse Vision: ‘For us the event experience in cinemas is crucial and JLS: Eyes Wide Open has raised the bar to new heights. With so many fans enjoying the movie on the same day we are confident that our unique approach to this movie release helped deliver an amazing result for the band and for our cinema partners’.

Unprecedented demand saw advance ticket sales rocketing with many cinemas selling out during the JLS fan-club ticket-presale. Over 100 extra cinema locations were then added across the UK and Ireland taking the total number of cinemas to 300. The film proved to be so popular that cinemas called for extra nationwide screenings again the following weekend, giving the film over 1000 screenings in total.

Mark de Quervain, Sales and Marketing Director of Vue Entertainment: ‘JLS has been nothing short of phenomenal for us. This was definitely a landmark event for Vue since we started showing alternative content back in 2007. This clearly shows that the public love to watch their favourite bands and artists in fantastic HD on our big screens... Larger than Live. We look forward to many more events like this in the future’.

Forthcoming events from Omniverse Vision include “Peter Gabriel: New Blood 3D”, “God Bless Ozzy Osbourne” and “Fastest” a Moto GP documentary featuring Valentino Rossi.
